About the job

The Entry-Level Estimator supports the preconstruction and estimating team by assisting in the preparation of quantity takeoffs, cost estimates, and bid proposals for a variety of construction projects. This role is ideal for recent graduates or early‑career professionals looking to build a strong foundation in construction estimating within a collaborative, dynamic, fast‑paced environment. The position reports to the Chief Estimator and is based in Needham, MA.


Responsibilities:

  • Review and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and related documents to develop accurate quantity takeoffs.

  • Assist senior estimators in preparing detailed cost estimates for material, labor, equipment, and subcontractor work.

  • Support the development of bid packages, proposals, and project budgets.

  • Collaborate with subcontractors, vendors, design teams, and other stakeholders to gather pricing, clarify scope, and ensure estimate accuracy.

  • Maintain organized estimate files, historical cost data, and project documentation.

  • Utilize Microsoft Excel and/or estimating software to compile, analyze, and present cost information.

  • Participate in value engineering exercises to identify cost effective alternatives and optimize project goals.

  • Contribute to continuous improvement of estimating processes and tools.

  • Apply a basic understanding of sustainable construction practices, including energy efficient design principles and materials.

  • Support estimating efforts on projects pursuing high performance building standards such as Passive House, LEED, or similar requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or relevant coursework in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience in estimating, construction, or a related discipline is preferred.

  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and technical documents.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel; familiarity with estimating software is a plus.

  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills with attention to detail.

  • Able to communicate effectively and exchange accurate information with team members, clients, subcontractors, vendors, and design professionals.

  • Strong organizational skills.

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

  • Experience with multifamily, commercial, education, and/or healthcare construction is a plus.

  • General understanding of sustainable construction concepts, Passive House principles, and value engineering methodologies.

  • Eagerness to learn and grow within the estimating and preconstruction field.

  • Strong problem‑solving mindset and willingness to ask questions.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a dynamic environment.

Working Conditions:


While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for long periods of time; talk or hear; perform fine motor, hand, and finger skills in the use of a keyboard, telephone, or writing. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; and reach with arms and/or hands. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee will spend their time in an office environment with a quiet to moderate noise level. Job site walking and climbing stairs in/around buildings or properties will also be part of their role. Other required activities may include bending, stooping, reaching as well as lifting, moving, and carrying up to 25 pounds. Salary range: $60,000 to $80,000 per year. Actual compensation may vary based on experience, skills, and qualifications.
